SOCIAL IMPACT

Health is Wealth Campaign

This campaign is a response to the communications disaster that swept local public meetings and social media channels in the spring of 2020. The devastating timing of the outbreak of COVID-19 threatened to collide with our annual harvest and amplified every social fracture that contributes to the deeply complicated culture of our region. I set out to replace hateful ugly posters in public places, feed sanity to the social media machine and make face masks. My priority was to communicate mandate compliance and support for the health concerns of the permanent residents of my tiny village with the one message that was never delivered by our federal, state or regional leadership: Health is Wealth. Design elements are based on early century medicine bottles as a reminder of the cellular memories of our resident native population and the ever coveted $100 dollar bill as a symbol of the record breaking success of our 1.5 billion dollar industry. The clothing was designed to create an anthropomorphic effect that activates the salmon as a support for the human spine while the head of the fish cradles the face like a mask. The campaign received a Silver Award from AIGA Alaska in October 2020 at The BIG One. The mask and a poster are slated to be included in both a museum exhibit in 2022 and the permanent collection at the Alaska State Museum.
